#5 San Juan
Some of you may be surprised that we start the list in the city, San Juan. Although not widely known for the best reefs around the island, San Juan is a very popular spot for those who are just starting out and who like beach snorkeling. They also offer a popular location known as Atlantis that has several sunken treasures that make the snorkeling and diving more exciting.
As you might expect, the beautiful island of Vieques, just 6 miles off the East coast of Puerto Rico, offers some of the best reefs and snorkeling. With several locations on this 21 mile by 5 mile island, you can find a new spot to snorkel nearly every day of the week. From the easy access to Esperanza beach, kayak snorkeling, taking a cruise on one of the many charter boats, there is something for everyone! There is snorkeling by day and DON’T forget to visit the Magical glowing waters of the Bioluminescent Bay while you are there.
Head West avid snorkelers! On the West coast of Puerto Rico is the town of Rincon. Not only a beloved favorite of locals for surfing and water sports, they offer some of the most beautiful snorkeling spots on the island with amazing reefs that get a lot less traffic than the East and many other locations.
You can see an abundance of marine life and varieties of species here. In addition to Rincon being the best place to see the annual humpback whale migrations, you will also find just 6 miles off the coast, the small secluded island of Desecheo. With crystal-clear waters, beautiful coral reefs, and visibility of up to 150 feet, Desecheo is a prime destination for diving and snorkeling enthusiasts alike.
Back to the East Coast we go! Just off the coast of Fajardo, in addition to the invisible line that separates the Atlantic Ocean from the Caribbean Sea, you will find several small islands known as The Spanish Virgin Islands. Whether you visit Icacos, Palominitos or Lobos, you will find miles of amazing snorkeling and sights! Imagine sailing or power boating out and just picking a spot on one of the islands and Cays to see miles of stunning reefs and colorful marine life including turtles, dolphins, reef fish and the occasional Manatee. With so much to offer off the coast of Fajardo, you will find your snorkel paradise here!
